Our text grants us some insight into the deplorable condition in which Job found himself. For he was at the lowest point in his existence surrounded by friends who rendered him very little to no emotional support. According to the testimony of his conscience, he was innocent. Desperation was sinking in and he was losing hope. Had Job forgotten the sovereignty of God? “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” –Isaiah 55:8-9

Yes, he was once known to be a man of reputable character, abundant wealth, good health and had a beautiful family. Yet perhaps now that God had allowed Satan to strip Job of everything the blessing of Lord was becoming increasingly more difficult to roll off his tongue. For at the beginning of his suffering he spoke with confidence, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” –Job 1:21

Our text indicates a revelation Job received of one of the sure benefits Christians would have in the future. For at this point, Job desired a mediator. Someone who would intervene on his behalf to reconcile himself to God before his body gave up the Spirit. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.  –1 Timothy 2:5

Do you feel lonely today? Do you feel as if no one understands? Do you feel forgotten?

Friend, I want to encourage you to be of good cheer. Take courage and persevere. For there is one who understands! His name is Jesus the Christ. He is nearby if you should choose to call on him. Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested. –Hebrews 2:14

Often times God will allow fiery trials and testing to come our way because he is refining us, sanctifying us and preparing us for a deeper intimate fellowship with himself even if that means bearing provocation in this present earthly life. For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps. –1 Peter 2:21

He is our High Priest rooting us on every step of the way. You are not alone “but now Jesus, our High Priest, has been given a ministry that is far superior to the old priesthood, for He is the one who mediates for us a better covenant with God, based on better promises.”–Hebrews 8:6

And God can be trusted to keep his promises. His track record is without blemish.

For God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through? –Numbers 23:19

Like Job, may we speak with resounding faith in the midst of our trials “but he knows where I am going. And when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold.” –Job 23:10 Amen

Abortion. Evolution. Homosexuality. These are three of several hot-button issues that people approach with varying beliefs and opinions. Convinced in their minds of these beliefs and opinions, many have suppressed God’s truth/exchanged His Truth on these issues for a lie. But believing in a lie doesn’t make the truth any less true. Consequently, because of those who have suppressed the truth, we are seeing God’s wrath poured out in our communities, nation and world. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. Romans 1:18 (English Standard Version)

What happens when we push for such beliefs, freedoms and opinions and God lets us have it our way? When God turns us over to our own hearts, it’s like He is saying to us, “Is this what you really want?”

Praise be to the Most High! The Creator of heaven and earth! Praise! To the only God who has created the creatures of the land, water and us human beings! Praise him even more for providing a way in which we can now fellowship with Him again through Jesus Christ, His Son.

For you were once alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard. –Colossians 1:22-23

In our chosen passage of scripture we’re encouraged by the Prophet Isaiah’s Hope in the Messiah to come. For the Messiah was to bring relief in the midst of the people’s distresses and they would share in His victories. He would be called Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace and Wonderful Counselor. Do we see Jesus as our Counselor?

Often times we depend too much on others instead of Him. While it is beneficial to have intimate support systems in our families and friends, our best counselor is Jesus Christ. For God has promised, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”–Psalm 32:8

Isaiah 9-6 for unto us a child is born

Man is of a fallen nature and consequently they can only provide but so much help! Jesus is of an uncontaminated and sinless spirit for the Bible says that “the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear.” –Isaiah 11:2-3

But it’s my prayer that we don’t only inquire of him when we get into trouble. Our days ought to be bathed in prayer for he is available at all hours of the day and all hours of the night. The Psalmist knew this very well when he said, “I will bless the Lord who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me. I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.–Psalm 16:7-8

You say, “But Jesus said He’s coming back someday. How can he counsel me now?” Friend, He has left you a Helper; One who can provide the same help in which you’ve received from Christ himself. For the Bible says, “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. –John 14:26

I may be physically short in person but I am tall on my knees in prayer! The world may put their trust in men and their counsels “but for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge that I may tell of all your works.” –Psalm 73:28 “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack! –Psalm 34:8-9 Amen

Your and My Self-Interests is Why We Need a Savior

So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. -Romans 7:21, New International Version, Paul said

For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.– Romans 8:13, New International Version

“Since it is impossible to count on enough moral goodwill among those who possess irresponsible power to sacrifice it for the good of the whole, it must be destroyed by coercive methods and these will always run the peril of introducing new forms of injustice in place of those abolished.” -Reinhold Niebuhr, author of Moral Man & Immoral Society, theologian and political philosopher

As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one.”– Romans 3:10, New International Version

Ugh. That last scripture in Romans 3:10 is sobering. Not even one is righteous.

All of the aforementioned quotes and scriptures boil down to one, crude fact: As human beings, much of what we do is driven by self-interest. Always thinking how we’re gonna get over, even if it risks another’s demise. Because we’re dependent upon various needs to preserve our physical life (ex: food, money, clothing, shelter, relationships, community, status) if left to our own devices, we may carry out unspeakable acts to secure these items should one or more be threatened. God knew this in creating us, even with the fall of Adam and Eve and mankind’s sinful nature revealed. A cunning serpent enticed the two that they could know more than God by eating fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden. Though God had instructed them to not eat from the tree, to think God might be keeping something good from them, stirred their self-interests to be all-knowing like God.

God sent His one and only Son Jesus Christ to live and die as the Savior of mankind. We are driven to satisfy the thirsts and urges of the flesh and physical needs. Such appetites not under control have driven many to kill, steal from others, oppress others and inflict injustices upon others. Without a heart transformed by Jesus Christ, even the most naturally goodwill-intentioned people would be corrupted by others’ untamed self-interests. Seeing their rights infringed on in such scenarios, even the most altruistic person void of a relationship with Christ would say, “the heck with it,” and seek measures at all costs to preserve their interests. Peace nor justice will ever be obtained in this manner.

In short, Jesus as our Savior, protects us from ourselves. As Savior, He replaces our propensity for evil with the desire to love and serve others above ourselves. He promises that in HIM we will have peace. In HIM we will have justice. In HIM we will have life and have it to the full. In HIM will our needs be met. He atoned for the inevitable evil in which we’re capable of committing, taking on the punishment we deserved. By inviting HIM into our hearts and lives, thankfully, in HIM, we are made righteous.

To Whom It Points

“I can’t stand preachers! Nobody is perfect! What do they have to tell me about my life?” If you haven’t heard anyone say something like that audibly, just keep on living and you will. Yet, consider that many have already said this in their hearts. What is the Gospel anyway? It is the message in which the apostle Paul was reminding the Corinthian people. It is that God, in His great love, decided to intervene in our lives by sending his only Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins and on the third day he rose from the grave with resurrection power and defeating the power of death.

It’s a great point to make that yes: No one is perfect so why should you listen to anyone that preaches or attempts to teach you? Think of your most beloved friend. Imagine yourself coming from a road that you know state authorities have yet to put a sign up of the great danger that lies ahead of a deep cliff that is on the end of that road. You know that you would do all that you can to stop your friend from traveling on that road to avoid your friend’s vehicle from going over the cliff, therefore saving their life.

The Gospel

This is likened to the Gospel message. No, those involved in the ministries of Jesus Christ are not perfect. In fact, God saved us WHILE we were still sinners! – Romans 5:8 Christ opened our eyes so that we might see and relay the great mystery of God’s love to others. Jesus once said to Martha who was distressed about her brother’s death and puzzled about Jesus timing in showing up to help, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” – John 11:25-26

Ministry work should always point to Jesus Christ. He’s the glue that holds the message together. Every work which is done for God is not necessarily the work of God. Doing something for him is not enough. The real question is, who is doing it? Only those who have been born again of the Spirit and led by the Holy Spirit should be doing the work of the Lord. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the spirit is spirit. –John 3:6 Much progress is being made in sharing the great commission, an imperative mission given by Jesus himself. –Matthew 28:19-20 But woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight. –Isaiah 5:20-21

Look to Christ Come to Christ Live for Christ

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. –Romans 1:18-20

Ministry leaders are not righteous in themselves but we point to, “the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.”–Romans 3:22 It’s my prayer you don’t look at the man preaching the word but look to the God-man in whom the man is preaching about. Amen

Guarding Your Heart God’s Way

Have you ever felt the sting of rejection or the cut of thoughtless or unkind words? Maybe you have been taken for granted, or even lied about by others. These and other offenses, when taken into the heart become wounds.  A wound left unattended becomes bitterness. Bitterness and unforgiveness produce cynicism, criticism, anger, depression, a hard heart and a life cluttered with bad fruit in almost every area.

I don’t know a single person who has not dealt with offense at some point in life. Offenses cause pain, and pain triggers our “natural” defense mechanisms to kick in. We tend to “put up walls” to make the pain stop and prevent it from happening again. This might seem to be the only way to guard our hearts, it isn’t God’s way.

So, what does it mean to “guard your heart” God’s way?

1. Recognize the real enemy. Jesus clearly told us that troubles would come to us in this life. Troubles usually bring with them a temptation to be offended at another person, God, or yourself. The real enemy is Satan, who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). Although people are oftentimes (usually unknowingly) used by Satan, the battle we fight is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). Although we “feel” things in the physical realm, the battle is altogether spiritual.

2. Live from truth. Being able to quickly recognize and cast down the lies of the enemy about yourself, God, and others will keep your heart safe. Satan sends forth his lies in an attempt to get you to step into his snare of offense. He is the master weaver of webs of deception. Knowing the truth of God’s Word will keep you out of snares of offense and keep your heart healthy.

3. Give up your right to be right. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who is right or wrong. What matters is the health of your soul. Holding on to offense while you are waiting for an apology that may never come or for someone else to see they are wrong, is prideful stubbornness and it will not result in the joy-filled life Jesus paid for you to have.

4. Release wounds, offenses, and hurts of every kind to Jesus. This is an act of faith, not feelings. His yoke is easy and His burden is light (Matthew 11:30). There is nothing heavier to carry through this life than a wounded, bitter soul. Regardless of how long you have carried it, it is never too late to give it to Jesus and receive His sweet rest instead. As often as you are offended, lay the offense at the feet of King Jesus and let your heart remain tender and free.

Next time you feel the temptation to be offended, remember it is not your burden to carry. Let the Lord be your Avenger. Keep your heart at peace by refusing to live in offense. Make a choice by faith to give it to Jesus. It is a spiritual decision. It doesn’t mean you don’t feel any pain, it simply means God’s peace is greater. It’s wise to deal with offense on the front end when it is a little seed than it is to wait until it is a full grown weed choking the life out of everything else in the garden of your soul.

Mama’s Got a Brand New Bag!

Copycats…right down to the jeans you wear, to how you style your hair, to the same schools you attended, degrees you earned to the professional titles you hold…and now to the SAME RED bag (purse) you carry. Where does it end??

The good news: I keep it real. The bad news: I keep it real. 

This topic is inspired by a powerful phone conversation I enjoyed with a dear friend a couple weeks ago. We’re alike in many ways, understanding very well each other’s line of thought, moral base, systems for operating, etc. The crescendo of our conversation entered the two-hour mark and by that time I responded to her, “Preach, woman!”

In short, she shared how a former college classmate and work colleague has copied her path. It’s questionable if the particular profession she’s patterned after my friend’s is even her true heart’s desire. The copycat simply fixed her eyes on the heights my friend’s path has taken her to and she wanted to acquire that same territory. My friend’s unique path has become the copycat’s idol. So much so, that she purchased the SAME red bag that my friend carries. Lord help!   lrg-red-bag

In my keeping it real with you, understand these three truths:

TRUTH 1: Everybody wants your formula for obtaining YOUR success. But they could hardly know all the sweat, tears, frustrations, lessons learned, starts and fits, doubts, pep talks, prayers, worries, second and third winds that are intricately blended into your “secret sauce.” They simply want the cookie-cutter pattern, the 11 secret herbs and spices without going through the laborious efforts, the hills and valleys or the necessary stretching to reach the next level.

TRUTH 2: It’s a privilege to mentor someone to aid them in successfully walking out their own unique path. It’s also a blessing that perhaps you’ve lived your life in such a way that people desire to pattern their lives after you. But taken too far, it becomes idolatry. The only One we should seek, pursue and pattern our very lives after is Jesus Christ.

TRUTH 3: You are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). No carbon copies. God says in Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” (New International Version). You’ve been set apart—for His purposes—for paths and purposes unique to you, not to be compared to others. You’ve been equipped with unique gifts to reach a specific population of people. As told in Proverbs 18:16, A person’s gift opens doors for him/her, bringing him/her access before important people. (International Standard Version)

Our God is Awesome! God is always doing new things (Isaiah 43:19)! We should always be growing, doing new things because this is what He desires for us! Frankly, what God did for you in 2013, won’t be the same thing He does for you in 2015! So those who seek to copy you and get your “secret sauce” will be working from old material! God is already directing you somewhere new!

There’s no secret formula, only to walk the path you are called to.

What comes to mind when you think of the apostle Peter also known as Simon? Denied Christ? Quick-tongued? Hasty? Impulsive? Over confident? These might be some of characteristics often associated with Peter. Throughout the centuries he is often remembered as the one who was fervent and zealous for Christ but denied him when Jesus was seized by the religious leaders and led away to be crucified. That sounds like some of us today. Oh, we don’t mind sharing our faith and serving the Lord during peaceful times but when times of persecution, danger, and mocking comes, how many of us do not stand firm for Jesus and instead shrink in fear denying him?

I suppose that Jesus found it extremely necessary to remind his disciples of Satan’s design and his schemes. For in the preceding verses of our text, a dispute arose among the disciples as to which of them would be considered the greatest. –Luke 22:24

The disciples had it all wrong. They were interested in worldly power instead of loving service to their brothers. Their pride had blinded their eyes to the spiritual warfare that was taking place and indeed would take place later on. Satan probably taunted Jesus and said, “Look at them, give them to me. Especially Peter so that I might try him.”

warrior-angelHowever, Jesus demonstrated His great love by warning and praying for Peter so that his faith would not fail. I am convinced that Peter later remembered Jesus’s warning about Satan. For Peter exhorted us in saying, “Be alert and of a sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” – 1 Peter 5:8 The Bible cautions us earnestly to be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. To put on the full armor of God, so that we can take our stand against the devil’s schemes. For there are dark and evil spiritual powers lingering around in our fallen world. – Ephesians 6:10-12

I’m so glad that Jesus made a way for us to be with him one day in his Holy Place (Heaven). For although like Peter, we can strengthen our brothers and sisters by praying for them, the truth is that we are human beings who are susceptible to forget praying for our family, friends, and ministers. Yet Praise the Lord! We do have ONE prayer warrior named Jesus who will never forget us, NEVER stop praying for us until we meet Him face to face. Christians are in a continual process of being sanctified and will indeed sin at times. Satan will try to trip us up and condemn us, but Hallelujah! The Bible says, “Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding (pleading, petitioning, praying) for us. –Romans 8:34
