The Lord Did What? Let’s Praise Him

Psalm 90:15- Give us gladness in proportion to our former misery! Replace the evil years with good. (New Living Translation)

Today is a day the LORD has made and we will surely be glad in it. Glad to the point of exhaustion for the Lord guides our steps and stabilizes our walk. Glad to the point of peacefulness because God has brought tranquility to a landscape of destruction. Glad to the point of immense respect, for The God Who Is has shaped our lives into a mold of His own, so we might correctly identify our Creator. Are you glad today? For the manna that fell out of the sky fed us, the water that sprung from that Rock quenched our thirst, and the cloak of mercy and grace clothed us. Therefore, who is glad today? Who can speak to the wonderful blessings brought to your life? Who can remember the tragedies, negative outcomes, and immense pain that transformed you into the person you are today? Through good or bad you are loved and welcomed into HIS arms—a notion that should bring a grin to all of our faces. Amen

Searching for That REAL Love

Proverbs 21:17- Those who love pleasure become poor; those who love wine and luxury will never be rich. (New Living Translation)

There is an old adage that says, “the love we miss is often the love we took for granted.” In other words, love is unconditional. For love is without fault when administered through sacrifice. A notion we have come to know through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. This now lends us a helping hand to distinguish what is REAL and what is FAKE. Fake are the friends who stand by your side when YOUR money is an option. Fake are those relationships that bear no reciprocity FOR YOU, but remain unilateral FOR THEM. Fake is nothing, but an illusion. Hence, the need for real friendships that place OTHERS before themselves, or real relationships that are contingent upon TRUTH rather than the evils of selfishness and greed, or finding real satisfaction in being left FILLED rather than being left empty. Real love is unconditional, a promise given by our Divine Friend. Amen

To wake up to the dawn of a horizon is heralded by most as a spectacular sight. To lay in a sea of grass gazing upon a starry night sky proves the magnificence of the Earth’s wonders. Two amazing views that demonstrate the beauty and work of God’s hands. However, like every coin there are two sides. Thus, with all the beauty held within this world, why does ugliness run rampant throughout it? Well, because good deeds are overshadowed by the cloak of night. For “all who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed” (John 3:20). It is there that our thoughts become unencumbered. It is there where actions become emboldened to satiate our desires. It is there where our courage multiplies by 10, to commit an act that normally would lie dormant. Therefore, may we live with the blinds wide open to allow the SON of MAN to come shining in. Amen

You Can’t Hold Me

It is an honor to be back after many asked, “Where are Herbert’s devotionals?” (In addition to Voices Against the Grain audiences, Herbert shares his devotionals to a growing reader list of 3,000+)

You didn’t make us, but God did. Hence, fall back into the dark pit from whence you came and be incinerated by the selfishness that was ignited through your flame. You can’t stop us, but God can. So, cease and desist your demands and decrees ‘cuz with God on our side our victory is guaranteed. You don’t understand us, but God does. Therefore, when He sees our spirits He blesses the path we tread, for we know that HE has already walked the journey ahead. You can’t break us, but God will. For He used you to bring us closer to HIM, before our lives became lost with the light in our eyes growing dim. So please remember that you helped us, which was constructed through God’s design. Amen

It was a cold winter morning when he awoke to a car idle in the driveway packed to the brim with luggage. It was then that the brake lights shone through his window pane. For all that he knew was becoming a speck in the distance. Now baffled by his circumstance his soul fell into utter torment. His body, now withered mirrored the inner turmoil of his mind, while his heart burdened the emotional distress of what he once knew, abruptly exiting his life. He is now defeated. It is only by the reappearance of the car that his Spirit begins to be uplifted, for what once was lost, now is found. He opens the door to find a car empty and pristine. To his chagrin, he asks, where did all the luggage go? The figure once cached within the shadows of the luggage steps out of the car and says, “It’s gone, the Lord will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall” (Psalm 55:22). Amen

It is by the decree of the modern world that marriage is becoming a foreign concept. It is by the decree of the modern world that fear swells up within our throats. It is by the decree of the modern world that marriages are to be as rare as a comet shooting across the midnight sky. Hence, we love, but can’t commit. We arrange, but the plans get delayed. We recoil, but find ourselves with the inability to create warmth. Thus, WE men in the modern world must not be frightened. For how many years will go by before that young lady receives the gift of your true love, which is sacrificial. Ladies, in the modern world, do not be frightened. For you do not have to give yourselves up to keep a man’s attention, because the attention should be captivated by your Spirit. Thus, let us look within our hearts to GIVE rather than to TAKE, it is then that the Lord’s design, will certainly take shape. Amen

We Did Not Expect

2 Corinthians 5:7- For we live by believing and not by seeing. (New Living Translation)

If we do not believe in ourselves, how on earth can we be expected to achieve? If the thoughts of others are genuine, why do their smiles look to deceive? If you care about the opinions of others, how can God reveal the trump card, which is cached beneath his sleeve? Thus, we walk this life not to fulfill the dreams of others, but to be prepped in order to administer the Lord’s good will to all who ask. For we didn’t expect to move to a new city, but God did. We did not expect to land a new occupation, but God did. We didn’t expect…the Lord to shift our lives solely on the premise that we were not ready. Hence, what we want is not even a small subset of God’s greater picture. Therefore, we move with confidence because we know HE has us. We work with a mentality of success because we know HE has us. We once were shaken, but that mustard seed grew into a mighty oak tree, to which no one could ever uproot because we know HE has us. Amen

Remember the Time

Sometimes it takes the words of 1 person to change your perspective. Sometimes it takes the same person to display tolerance, in order to illustrate a concept that you may have forgotten. Sometimes that person can provide a new vantage point from an angle that was previously unseen. Maybe that person reset your clock back to a time where you were stumbling through the world in order to locate solid footing. Your mind has now been altered to see the reflection of your former self. Whether destitute, lascivious, or pious you have seen yourself grow from experiences of hardships, judgments and/or failures. Therefore, that 1 person has illuminated a life once trapped behind the shutters. For we’re not called to live within our hypocritical glass houses to peer out and condemn from afar. No, we’re called to shatter the facade that held us captive, in order to reach others who can now benefit from our God ordained tutelage. Amen

The Land Already Scouted

At first our belief wavered, but then we sought out council for our belief to be restored. We lived in fear, but God assured us that if we “Go in peace,” that “the lord is watching over our journey” (Judges 18:6). Therefore, we follow HIS lead, while walking within the faith to succeed. We now take another step out into this unknown domain, to trust in the Lord always as he goes ahead to scout out the rugged terrain. For two steps is what was needed to remove ourselves from the lagoon of skepticism, to begin our inhabitants in the well-spring of joy and good tidings. Hence, our lives have been placed through the kiln in order to be hardened into the mold God formed us to be. Thus, when cooled, no rain, nor intense heat will be able to crack our inner shell. Hence, the reason we approach our task with immense confidence for the Lord is our shield and with HIM our victory is imminent. Amen

Riches Untold

A life lived with a lesson learned. A generous heart with no money to burn. A cheerful giver who left no one spurned. It’s the belief that money held closely leads to more money gained. That the less money spent will gather interest to help double the riches that God provided you. However, “we came into the world with nothing and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.” (1 Timothy 6:7). Therefore, why should we trust it? For money has many forms, such as the snake that slithers away from the just to the hands of the unjust. The bomb that is passed from those responsible to those who wish to strike terror in the hearts of individuals. Perhaps, it’s the tool used to fund life-saving research. Hence, money can’t be our life’s goal, but rather the favor of God and the blessings of good friendships. Amen
